Electrical utility companies, manufacturers, landlords, and property owners all have responsibilities to maintain safe electrical lines and equipment. The utility companies must follow the requirements of the National Electrical Safety Code - strict, minimum requirements to ensure that persons do not unnecessarily contact dangerous electrical lines - when supplying electricity to consumers. For example, utility companies must elevate and insulate their lines and equipment out of reach of people. They must also maintain and inspect the lines and replace insulation before it wears out. As these giant utilities rush to increase profits, they often cut corners and don’t inspect and maintain their lines. They may delegate the inspections to unqualified meter readers or they may wait until equipment becomes dangerous and worn-out before they consider replacing. Utility companies, because they are in the best position to know their own system, are required to exercise the highest degree of care to keep the systems safe.
Landlords and property owners must inspect their properties to make sure there are no dangerous interior wires that may pose a fire or shock hazard to tenants or customers.
Electrical appliances may also be dangerously or defectively designed, or they may be negligently manufactured in an effort to save money and increase production.
